12:20 - 13:00 Multidisciplinary care for children with missing teeth
Joseph Shapira

There are a large number of children suffering from absence or loss of teeth due to developmental, genetic or environmental etiologies. This missing of teeth leads to loss of function and lack of normal alveolar growth, along with unpleasant esthetics that hamper the psychological development of the young child.
It is our purpose, therefore, as pediatric dentists, to rehabilitate the toothless area, to keep thevertical dimension and to provide function for those children for their self-esteem, improving esthetics, normal speech development, improving chewing and swallowing and improving the performance of their TMJ.
My presentation gives the theoretical background and implications of growth and development assessment and recommendations for the formulation of treatment plan in pediatric dental implant patients.
My presentation also describes two children: 4 and 5.5 y.o. with Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia to whom our multidisciplinary team planned and placed implants using various behavioral management techniques and sedative modalities in order to deal with the difficulties of managing these 2 small aged children.
Rehabilitation on implants is not the treatment of choice for all children, but only in those exceptional cases of missing of many or all teeth. In these cases, psychological wellbeing, stable rehabilitation, function and esthetic, worth the risk.
